If you're thinking of buying new (or nearly new) and value space over outright performance, then have a look at the 1.5dCi Laguna III too. The fuel economy is surprisingly good for such a large car - in fact, both economy and emissions are only fractionally worse than the Clio that you're considering (they're quoting 57.6 for combined cycle.) The claimed 0-60 of 12.3 seconds isn't breathtaking, but it quite an achievement for such a small engine in such a large car. The fact that they're not selling might bag you a decent deal on a new one too.

Unfortunately, 1.5 engine isn't available in Initiale trim (or at least it wasn't when I last looked.) You can have it in a Dynamique though, which didn't look like a bad spec when I was having a mooch round one in the showroom the other day. If you're going to miss your DVD navigation, then it seems to be a sub-1000 quid option these days (it used to be 1500.)
