You can check if the fob is emitting IR through a digital camera/camcorder - although the CCDs in digicams have IR filters built in, a strong source of IR such as your keyfob or a remote control is usually visible as a bright blue/white light on the camera's screen.

I have the same problem. It is my plip/fob. It can be coded by any auto lock specialist, however, they can only get the fob from a dealer costing the same as you pay. It is about £80 for the fob and £50 to have it coded at Renault. You will need you V5 and driving license when you goto order the fob which can take upto 10 days to arrive.
That is if it is the fob. Have a go at what I have posted in the link above. Next time it doesn't work then get your camera out. Mine is still intermittant so can get in, just takes a while.
