The front speakers DO cut out when the fader is turned all the way to 'Rear'. I've had the audio unit out of the dash and it does look as though it is wired for 4 speakers.

I'm thinking that either there's a break somewhere in the speaker wires or the rear speakers are missing completely. I'll have to take the door card off to see this, as suggested above.
