Advice Wanted - Which Sat Nav to Choose?

I'm going to get the other half a Sat Nav but don't really have any experience of them. I'd be grateful for any input on which brand/model to go for.

It's only for the UK, mainly local areas (central Scotland). It would be nice to either have something which had a long battery life, or something which can be hard wired and hidden in the centre console or something. It needs to be user friendly for people with no sense of direction whatsoever (visiting family involving a straight motorway drive and then one turn is daunting). Exterior dimensions could be important if I'm hard wiring into the car somewhere.

Tomtom seems to be pretty good but there's quite a few reviews of them breaking down after a bit more than a year. Is Garmin better?

Thanks in anticipation (prepares to be bombarded with a wealth of input).
