Xenon lights work on the same principle as flourescent strip lighting and are known as discharge lamps. As a general rule if the ballast goes the bulb will not even try to illuminate or will flicker. A duff bulb tends light but to discolour.
The components can be very expensive from Renault and the newer ballasts are better water-proofed.
