I think that is because th computer calculates in litres/100km ( or whatever the metric equivalent is) and converts it to mpg.
We had a Picasso with similarly irregular readings, increments of about 0.7mpg. When we went to France and changed speedo etc to km/h the trip computer incremented in 0.1 litres/100km for fuel consumption. Just to compare I flicked back to mpg and increments were approx 0.7mpg, back on metric and consistantly 0.1l/100km.
So it is not just renault it is the "coversion" between metric and imperial that brings up the discrepancies.
