But... Carbon Dioxide is harmless to human health (although perhaps I should say 'harmless in the short term' if global warming is primarily caused by an increase in its emissions), wheras most harmful substances in car exhaust are vastly increased in lean burn engines, and the loss of performance and economy from cats is indeed a bad effect, but does it outweigh (especially in diesels) vastly increased Carbon Monoxide emissions?

The same is true of particulate filters on diesels, they have an appreciable effect on economy, and other implications and costs in running the car. On the other hand, diesel particulate emissions create a cancerous fog in city centres.

I rest at least somewhat contented with the fact that an engine today of comparable power output will still typically have vastly better economy than an equivalent engine designed in times predating cats, DPFs, etc, despite the fact that modern cars are also typically heavier and larger than those around at the time (in Europe, at least.)
