In some engines gas can be added as a supplement fuel but not as a replacement fuel and as already said the engine needs to running fairly evenly and not under changing loads. This idea has been around for a long time and has been adapted for large stationary engines which run at a constant speed and load. I have actually seen an experimental diesel engine running on a wood smoke supplement which was used to run a large scale generator connectied to the local electricity grid.
