Faulty key fob or Central Locking System?

My daughter's key fob on her Y reg Clio has stopped working.
Renault garage thinks the key is knackered & wants about 150 to replace & code it.
Question: Should the central locking still operate normally with key used manually?

It doesn't, she has to lock each door individually, which leads me to think that there may be an issue with the central locking mechanism rather than the key?

Any clues??

Is there any test I can do to the central locking system to prove it?

All help welcomed
