Here's an update....
Had the crank sensor changed (and a short new bit of wiring loom which plugs into it) as this bit wasn't very expensive, and at least it eliminates one thing. The code reader indicated that there was a fault with "sensor A" before any work was done. All the fault codes are now clear and the car starts and runs normally...for now.
Does anyone know if "sensor A" refers to the black box of magic which the throttle pedal is physically connected to? The signal wiring from this black box (which presumably contains the potentiometer) then goes off to the throttle body . Previously the black box wasn't changed, but the throttle body was.....
