To get the road tax refund, you need to SORN it - DVLA won't issue a refund unless you notify them what's happening with the car (i.e. sold, scrapped, off road).
If your driveway is private land (i.e. part of your property), then you'll be fine as long as no part of the vehicle goes beyond your boundary.
Various car breakers offer a collection/uplift service, but I'd be inclined to try and sell off various bits & bobs beforehand, as scrap values of cars is very low (I hear radio adverts locally stating £75 for an uplifted motor).
Of course your neighbours may not appreciate an ever-diminishing car in their view - you can decide if its feasible or not.
Remember, to use a salvage/scrapper which is DVLA registered so that the identity of the vehicle (and your link to it) are dealt with properly.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
