Engine Fan not switching on

After a short trip on the motorway id come home and even after switching engine off you could here the radiator fan still spinning colling it down.

But recently Ive never heard the fan or opened bonnet to see fan spinning. Also noticed lot of water being used up without noticeable overheating being displayed. So is excessive water being used up to cool the radiator as the fan is not working?

is there any way to test the fan is broken or thermostat. Is this something only picked up by diagnostics?

EDIT:
The fan does rotate if spun manually. I dont notice any water under the car due to leaking.

Lots of fan systems wont work without water in the system, it is a crazy idea, as the fan switch needs to know the engine is hot.
You need first to find the water leak,......
Fill your system up with water, but do it slowly, with your engine running.
leave the expansion cap off. Switch your heating system, inside the car, to its highest setting.
Keep filling your system, until you can see it in the expansion bottle, then stop filling.
Get inside your car, and rev it up to 2000 rpm. as soon as you feel heat coming out, let it idle.
Switch your engine off, replace the cap, dont put any more water in.
Go have a cup of tea, or whatever you want to do. But leave the car for 10 minutes.
Once you can hold your hand on the top hose of the radiator, take your cap off your expansion bottle.
Now fill up to the correct level.
Replace the cap.
Now start your car, let it get up to temperature, switch it off, now look for leaks
Look around by your alternator area,,( water pump ) and your thermostat housing.
If its your radiator, you will see it get wet, and run down
The other two areas, look for drips, and rusty water signs

heat coming put the expansion tank? is it safe to rev engine without the cap on? I can try this. Only problem is in certain areas there is liquid/oil on the surface of parts of the engine. I guess id have to clean those first. i read on some radiators you you have this switch on the side that you can short using a paper clip to test if fan motor is working
