Yes, it sounds like these are pitting marks.

Regarding polishing out scratches - there are specific tools for that job, so I can't guarantee the outcome in using other, improvised methods.

These would namely be; jeweller's rouge, a double-action sander with a very fine paper (circa 3-4000 grit) and light pressure, cutting compound/a damp cloth/plenty of elbow grease.

If you do decide to try any of these methods, go carefully and start on an inconspicuous part of the screen, don't allow the glass to get too hot or you will put scorch marks onto the surface.

You may want to get a few quotes before attempting this yourself, as it may be cheaper than you think (I would normally be up to 50 - as a rule of thumb).
