I'm off to check eBay for cheap Lag 2's.

Our dTi gets around 50mpg driven normally (usually quite heavily, dear Mrs.Lag has a switchable right foot, either straight up or straight down, mine is non-adjustable and stays down most of the time),but the extra power from the 2.2 dCi would come in handy.
Go for it they're dirt cheap atm Check autotrader ...

I'm plotting a nice GT 175 phase II in a year or two

The only uneconomical repair I'm aware of is engine seizure due to turbo runaway and there aren't many of those on the 2.2 (crosses fingers toes legs...) - I also reckon when they go in this way its more due to ignoring symptoms, infrequent oil changes etc.

Currently in bpowell555's garage:
2002 Renault Laguna II 2.2dCi Initiale, 1990 E30 325i Touring (Bavarian Tigzwerken Express)
