Driving home on Friday night (around half midnight) my heart almost jumped in to my mouth as the back windscreen exploded under its own accord.
Flakes of glass cracked off on to the road and a whole load in to the boot. When I closed the drivers door (are gently as possibly) most of the glass caved in.
I went and had a look around to see if there were any groups of kids hanging around (incase a stone or pellet had been shot) but there were no signs.
I had the heated rear screen on like every night, but Friday night was only 2 degrees whereas I've had it on every other night recently at as low as -4. I polished the car last weekend and noticed no blemishes or chips in the glass.
I took it to Autoglass on Saturday and they had a new windscreen fitted on Sunday. They couldn't identify the problem but suggested that perhaps the thermostat is broken and the heater overheated the cold glass.
I bought some touch up paint and primer etc. for Flame Red in Halfords and will start hiding the scratches when I get time to clean it.
So, has anyone got any ideas what could have caused this?
I've heard reports from friends that this has happened to their Renaults due to poor fitting, could this be true? We've had the car for 2 years. I'm anxious that it may happen again. I think I'll get a local garage to check the electrics now that I know the glass it properly fitted.
