Vaseline is a trade name - which is actually a form of soft paraffin wax and is also known as petrolatum. Whilst wax may have some lubricating qualities it has very little heat resistant qualities - goes soft very easily at human body temperature (when you smear it on a babies bottom for instance) and will harden at around 3 degrees centigrade. Fairly good at repelling water but not a long lasting lubricant and as petroleum by-product can be very damaging to rubbers and plastics. I believe there are such warnings on a packet of condoms
