I got a quote for a new timer unit from Renault for a 19 that I had a few years ago,and even then it was around 90 plus vat.As it happened I didn't need it in the end,an earth wire had broken off of the back of the alternator.This isn't your problem though as my glow plugs didn't work at all.

Have you had anything done to the fuel system recently,i.e a fuel filter change or similar?.Also there are known issues with the diesel pumps on some dTi's where by they leak internally and can cause intermittant starting problems.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
