hi
it sounds like the float arm has partly fallen off the fuel pump unit.
you are going to need to get it removed and have the retaining clip fished out of the tank and refitted on the float arm.
tank must not be left without the securing ring on it for more than 15min. any longer than 30min and your fuel tank WILL deform, which cannot be fixed.
there is a special tool that renault can sell that will make the removal of the ring very easy.(about £60)
I think you mean the trip/mile meter is going back to zero?
if that is the case get your battery load tested, my megane did the same just before the battery packed in.
get the battery checked over before looking at pulling the fuel pump out, especially if there are other dashboard issues.
one the battery is checked to be ok, get a multimeter on the fuel pump output to see if its working ok with a steady output, compare output to dash readings. if the output is good but the dash is missreading then there might be a voltage regulator problem on the dashboard clocks pcb. (either send the dashboard clocks off for repair or replace with a secondhand unit)
the tank tool is probably better than trying to use a large flat bladed screwdriver/chisel and hammer (its easy to snap the lugs off the ring and not get it correctly torqued up) to take the ring off.
(you can always sell it on ebay after, you should be able to make your money back on it.)
