Renault Laguna 2 - Humming/Buzzing From Interior Mirror

You may think I've lost it but I've got a slight noise coming from my internal mirror starting about 2 months ago. It's similar to the noise made if you run your nail down a comb and if I put my ear to the mirror I can also just about hear a noise like an electric motor running. I can just about hear the "comb" noise when I'm driving and it makes the noise without the engine running as long as the card is pushed right in the slot. The car's a 2.2 dci initial with plenty of toys so I'm assuming it's something to do with whatever's in the mirror to make it dim automatically when the headlights of the car behind shine at it. Anyone got any ideas?

yep youve, lost it, lol

i would imagine that its a tooth off a cog that contols the tilt has broken off, and its causing the other teeth to rub in it gap, hopfully somone else may be able to give you a better idea of what i could be

I think I read that there's a little fan in there. It's something to do with temperature sensing for the aircon

Madnoel10 posted about it the other day, apparently he cleaned and greased his (no crude remarks please) and the sound almost went

The fan blades on the cabin sensor are quite small and difficult to clean but using one the wifes dental plaque brushes (looks like miniture bottle brush) did the job perfectly. It seems the dirt accumulated on the fan blades makes it run out of balance - thus making it noisy. The bearing are the brass sintered type - so after a few blasts of WD40 and a final shot of light spray grease everything quietened down. Quite a fiddly job and it takes a bit of patience.:)

I have a Laguna II on a 55 plate, it has auto dimming centre mirror. When the engine is on it makes an annoying electrical humming noise.

Has anyone had this issue and did you find a fix for it?
Thanks,

Wayne
Does anyone know what the symptoms would be if this cabin sensor stopped working?
Mine had been making a lot of noise for ages, now it doesn't. The climate is set to 21 (both sides) all the time but of late the ac is on virtually continiously and I have started seeing a lot of water drips from the underside of the car when parking. May all be related to the recent aircon rad replacment / regas, I am wondering if maybe Renault replaced the sensor as part of the job, although I doubt it.

Hi.

That happens on the Laguna II Phase 1 a lot - yours is the phase 2 being a 55 plate. Its coming from the fan in the rear view mirror housing that controls the climate control.

On the phase 1 lag II the cover for it slides off, so you can get access to the fan inside. Its probably just all gummed up with dirt and dust etc. A can of compressed air may help remove the dust from the fan.

what is it please?

Apart from the 'whistling' engine - see another thread, I have another noise issue!!

Above the screen with the sunroof switches, interior lights etc there is another vented panel which buzzes constantly once the ignition is turned on and remains so.
I've removed the cover to find a small electric motor with a little fan whirring its head off, is this something to do with the alarm/immobiliser? - surely it can't work constantly, it looks like a little scalextric motor with a life expectancy of about 10 minutes!
I am totally mystified as to its purpose, and what harm if any is there in disconnecting it?

What with this and the whistling turbo life is hardly quiet sat behind the wheel!

Help!

The cabin sensor inside the pod at the interior rear view mirror contains a small fan and sensors which monitor not only temperature but also oxygen levels, etc. If you listen closely and cannot hear a faint hum then it looks like the fan ain't working and therefore no air is being drawn over the sensors. The air-con system will then over or under activate and not be regulated properly. The fan and its housing are notorious for gathering dust casuing the fan to be noisey or fail altogether.
When I removed mine I cleaned it out with a small brush and a blast off air from some air-in-the can computer cleaner and then gave the fan bearing a very small shot of spray grease.

Re: Windscreen fan making noise

That's the sensor for your aircon.

You should be able to get at it and give a clean and lubricate with some light oil.

There's a couple of posts on here somewhere on the subject :)

When I had my Lag II I found thinning a little copper grease with a few drops of white spirit and applying it to the motor bearings helped. The bearings are known as "Oil-lite" bearing which dry out after a while. If you can do it on the bench all the better. WD40 is useles as a lubricant and in fact may make matters worse as it is primarily a de-watering agent.

For Oilite bushes in AV equipment, which we did a lot of.
A lasting repair, involved a small pot of engine oil, drops of which were applied with a screwdriver.
But in severe cases, motor was dismantled & the bearing left overnight to soak.
Probably not practical with "throw away" motors. :frown2:
