Thanks very much for the info but I can't find the pictures etc. on the forum,could you please point me in the right direction?I have entered clio speedo but cant find it.
The article in question actually refers to the replacement of the sensor on a Laguna, but is equally applicable to the Clio in that a) the sensor is usually a clip-in job and b) is located behind the gearbox - on the Clio at least, it's a monumental pain in the backside to get at unless you can get the car up on a ramp and go at it from underneath.

as my starting point.
Putting "speedo sensor" or "speedometer sensor" in as the search term might widen your options a bit more. Something else that might be worth investigating is the possibility of a bad earth connection in the engine bay (at least according to a few of the articles I've read)
