It would depend on the car - what make and model is it.
The alternator light remaining on usually denotes the alternator ain't putting out any voltage but that could be for a number of reasons such as no drive belt, duff alternator, duff alternator clutch or a wiring or elcetronic fault - take your pick. Do you know why it wasn't sold
Take your time about buying and be patient- I can see some real bargains in the motor market real soon. In the motor trade January is known as the hungry month
