Yes - get a second opinion.
Sounds like you're being taken for a ride (no pun intended)

I'd suggest checking the wiring in the rear light clusters, since it's very likely this is where the problem lies (in my case it was the offside rear light wiring) - there could be corrosion, as Lag suggested, or it could be that one of the earthing wires has worked loose. If there are any wire ends exposed and/or corroded then more often than not they can be cleaned up with a nail-file or some fine wet-and-dry. If there's water in there, shift it with a squirt of WD-40

There may well be a list of earthing points in the Haynes manual - don't have mine handy so can't check - but starting at the back of the car and working forward may be the best way to approach it.
