Technically speaking,any HID unit in this country is sort of illegal,they have never gained type approval but the number of manufacturers that fit them nowadays has forced us to accept them.

Again techincally,by law you should have a self leveling system and a means of remotely cleaning the lenses on all HID headlights,so by fitting one without the above you may actually be breaking the law.

Having said that,they don't fail an MOT as long as the beams are set up correctly.The police use 'Construction and Use' laws on the road which are different to the standards set by VOSA for the MOT,so I don't know how you'd stand if you got pulled over.I haven't heard of anyone being prosecuted for using the aftermarket kits,but theres always a first time.

Just to differentiate here,there are 'Xenon filled bulbs' that can be fitted to standard headlights and also complete HID systems,the bulbs aren't the problem,the HID kits maybe......

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
