Further to my original post, some additional searching of the web led me to the keyrepair.co.uk site.
Identified the fault, got it fixed within 3 days and saved over £100 vs the "stealership" charges.
The circuit board within the card had broken and needed to be repaired.
When I visited my local Renault people, they told me I needed a new card, never mentioned it could be repaired, albeit not by them. They were trying to get money out of me, pure and simple.
If you own a Laguna or Espace, or indeed any model that uses keycards, visit the above site even if your keycard is working perfectly fine at the moment. There are tips on how you can protect your card, not mentioned in the vehicles' user manuals. Well worth a look!
