You can yes IIRC. Thinking about it, cars that are under three years old dont need one, so the first time they are MOT'd they wont have a previous certificate - so shouldnt matter.
I think you only need the old certificate if you want the MOT done up to 4 weeks before the due date.
We have an MOT tester on the forum (Lagdti) who will know for sure. Im sure he'll be around later.
