Excellent idea nd pics as well
I have used a similar idea using a set of jump leads connected to an old battery - it takes very little power to maintain the memory settings. In order to reduce the spaghetti I just connected the negative jump lead to a metal part on the engine and that way I can take the battery out completely. I used an old latex glove with a few missing finger tips to insulate the negative terminal. Another way of doing it is to connect via the cigarette lighter socket - this way prevents any stray cables lying around the engine bay if doing any engine work.
