Renault Laguna II - Phase 1 - Wheels and Tyres - Tyre Pressure Sensors - Member experiences and solution

Despite contrary opinion from main Renault dealers, it's quite possible to have a tyre changed at an independent tyre specialist without upsetting the tyre pressure sensors on your Laguna or Espace etc. As the tyre fitter to make sure that the wheel is put back on the same corner, and you should have no problems

Good point Don.:)

We had a customer with a very high mileage (260,000 miles) Lag 2 which wanted the pressure monitoring system disabled as the black box reciever was ripped off by going through flood water.I told him at the time that a dealer could do it,but apparently they refused as it was a safety item.Surely if it didn't work, disabling the system wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference?.But anyway,he stuck some insulation tape over the warnings and drove on.He checked his tyre pressures regularly so didn't rely on the system.

It doesn't matter though,he's just bought a Jag off of us and part ex'd the Lag 2......and no,I didn't buy it......but someone did..

Rear right tyre pressure abnormal

My husband checked the air pressure in my tyres yesterday and they were all pumped up to about 30. However, each time I start the car and it does its checks, both rear tyres flash on the display although the one reading says 31 and the other tyre reading says 19 (even though it isn't). The system then tells me that the rear tyre pressure is abnormal and my dash turns to red and it keeps telling me to stop. Has the sensor failed? Any assistance is gratefully received.

Thank you.

Nina

I just thought it was worth a try, doesn't seem like many have been brave enough to try it

It works as a reset, you start the engine, pull fuse two, engine cuts out. when you put the fuse back in, restart the engine and all four wheels show up without any pressure values, it says 'ok' in big letters and the renault logo stays out for a while, until the error comes back up.

I don't know whether it would stay as all wheels on with no values if normal valves were to be used, but my guess would be that if it couldnt find any it would cause even more of an error.

I cleaned all the connections and my front left still doesnt register. hmm.

sorry to wade in a little late, but can someone help here:
i've 16" wheels on my Lag2 and am looking to replace them with 17" alloys, (silverstone, gt, drenalic).

firstly, valves - if they dont come with the new wheels, can i source them easily? and to what cost?

would this be an easy job for a "ats" type garage to fit?

do they need calibrating?

do they or dont they need matching to the car?

basically, anyone have any experience of changing alloys whilst retaining the tyre pressure sensor feature?

Hi dibbers,
you can get new sensor valves at any Renault dealer from memory they are about £30 I think. They have different coloured rings with each one so you are able to put the appropriate colour on the wheel as required.
You do need them calibrated, but I obtained 2 and my tyre specialist put them on the new tyres as per my position instructions. They are all numbered individually so I ensured the number was written down and the position noted. This info I passed on to my Renault dealer, who amended my records accordingly.
They worked very well and that was almost 12 months ago. You should also replace the dust caps with plastic ones because metal ones corrode and sometimes break when working on the tyre/wheels.
Hope this helps.

cheers for all of the replies everyone. all clear, but my o/s question in a nutshell is, if i own car "A" with 16" wheels, can i take wheels / tyres / valves straight off of car "B" and put them onto car "A".

understood that new valves need programming - but would the current, functioning valves off of car "B" still need calibrating to car "A"?

< desperately trying to loose the 16" wheels! >

Just replaced my N/S/R tyre valve, it cost a shade over £27 from the dealer and I am fortunate enought to work for a company who has their own workshops and using the workshop local to me was able to program the valve using their Autodiagnos machine, it was a doddle all it asked me to do was enter the valve number which was on a sticker on the valve and confirm I wanted to write the code to the ECU. So how come dealerships charge so much (I was quoted £95 to program when I bought the valve), how do they sleep at night!!

Exactly!!! As electronics get more complex garages will try and extract more money for what they think is a soft touch. Fortunately there are those indy garages out there who can keep up and provide a competitive service. The answer is obvious - boycott the sharks and the manufactureres who seek to exploit. It is becoming more the norm for manufacutrers to build in complex systems that will ensure (or so they hope!!) that dealers will be attracted to sell their products hoping that they will have exclusive access to repairs. Gone are the days of mechanics capable of innovation and now we have a breed of fitter who will change parts solely on the basis of a computer based diagnostic (despite the fact that the parts changed have no effect on a proer solution to the faults). I know from what could have been an expensive experience how easily it can be to trust (?) the experts(?) in the vain hope that they can solve a problem.
If there any of you out there who still retain something approaching professional pride in being able to actually fix things I hope you will continue to do so as for the rest I for one will not be shelling out big bucks to keep the boys in smart suits in the style to which they have become accustomed. As the crunch deepens we will see more dealerships come to realise that service is what counts or disappear. We should be more like other nations and COMPLAIN when we get less than 100% satisfaction.

Hi nclough2
I have all sensor valves working because I can't see the point of having the feature if it is not in action. Touch wood I have not had any problem for at least 2 years. I just purchased my sensor valves and got local tyre company to put them in. I did give the numbers to my Renault dealer who recorded which wheels they were on. They are really usefull to report low pressure on puncture warnings.
However my friend has a Laguna and has all normal valves on it . It just shows a picture of a car with no wheel faults listed.. There was no need to remove a fuse.
Good luck.

Tyre Valves

Does anyone know what flavour of green cheese the valves are made of.

In the two years I have owned my Lag II, I have snapped two valves, simply by offering up a garage air line connector to them.

Now the car has always had plastic caps, so dissimilar metal corrosion should not have been a factor.

It's just so very annoying when it happens......not to mention extremely expensive (new valve plus programming). Not only that, most tyre firms do not stock, and you have to troll off down to the main dealer's parts department - but not after 12 noon on a Saturday (which is generally round about the time I tend to snap these things off....).

The pressure sensing system has always worked reliably for me, though (touch wood). The box of tricks under the car almost fell off at one stage......rubbish clips, and repaired with tie-wraps.

Does anyone know if later Lags (post 2004) have had the cheesy valve problem sorted? And are the pressure monitoring systems better?

Great forum by the way. The climate control backlight repair advice saved me squillions.......deep joy

Thanks Normc, I appreciate it would be nice to have all these things working. However, when I recently bought the car, I only have 1 of the correct valves. It would be much cheaper to replace that and do without the system.

Could you confirm that your pal with no valves doesn't get the lady saying tyre pressure system not working, and the orange Sensor fault warning lights on ? If this is the case, I'm happy to do without. After all I've managed without for the last 30 years ! Cheers.

Spear wheel did not show up on display . Tyre changed this morning was told original valves on tyres not sensor valves ?? Tyre seem ok on normal valves is this car fitted with tyre sensor ? Can this option be switched off ? Do you think I should phone Renault and give them a gob full? Car still under warranty may phone them anyway . Any info will be gratefully appreciated

How can I disable the tyre sensor's?

I have a 52 Laguna II. As with nearly all Renault owners the Tyre sensors are driving me up the wall. When i bought it a few months ago it only had three sensors working and then two. I decided to go for the cheap option off having all the valves replaced in a hope that this would get rid of the pesky tyre sensor fault light flashing. It didn't. I have tried pulling out the immob fuse and locking the doors manually and then inserting the fuse again but this only resets for 25 miles! then at 25.1 miles that voice from hell interupts my radio to inform me that my sensors are faulty!!!! Please, Please, Please could someone tell me exactly how to disable this pain in the ass! Thanks
