Could be the batttery was overcharging or leaking at some time causing an acid build up - thus the corrosion.
Basically there are two methods of repair either a metal repair or using a filler system to bridge the holes.
A proper welded repair woul be the best but welding close to electrics and insulation can be tricky with the risk of fire, etc.
