You dont "have too", but it does reduce the wear / load on the starter motor when starting up.
I always do it anyway as I leave the car in gear when I park as well, incase the handbrake slips or the cable snaps !
Yea I was taught to do the same for this very reason, just incase the car is in gear.
Has been a few occoisions I haven't pressed the clutch and the car has lurched forward as it was in gear and I've forgotten
Lucky the handbrake is on!
