It could be a reciever problem then,which makes it a little more difficult to diagnose and probably more expensive to fix I'm afraid.I must admit,just because the light illuminates doesn't mean that the key is emitting a signal so I would start there,but if they are both giving problems then it does sound a little ominous.
Have the signals checked,and if they are both good,then really the only option is to find either a very good auto electrician or Renault specialist with the right kit to diagnose the fault,or(as much as it pains me to say it) a trip to your local Renault dealer.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
