Espace Fuel Gauge Erratic

I have an 2002 Espace 2.2DCi

I have an intermittent problem with my fuel gauge. When the car is filled with fuel it normally - but not always - shows "full". Within about 30 miles it will be 1 (out of 9) bars down the display, and within about 250 miles (out of about 600 per tank that I get) the fuel low warning will start to kick in.

This may seem a small problem, but it is irritating as the fuel/service warning is a) distracting and b) hides the clock display.

Is there a possibility that there is a poor connection to the dashboard circuit boards? I ask because when I removed the dash to adjust the alarm sensor, I noticed that the fuel gauge problem was mitigated somewhat, and I reckon I may have disturbed a loose connection.

The sender itself seems to be a big job to change - is there a way of adjusting the gauge without replacing the sender which, if it is the problem, is clearly working, though is well out of calibration.
