Help with engine control unit (brain) and imobilizer on 01 Scenic

This one has been a nightmare. Car ran fine on Sat (mid November), but would not start at all on Monday. Called my mechanic who said it sounded like key and imobilizer lost synch - They tried to reprogram computer - But would not work. Towed car to garage and have been trying electronic diagnostics since with decision to replace computer (brain) for engine and transmission??
They claimed they were able to disconnect (programing) the imobilizer and then the car would start, but would remain in one gear? Then took car to another garage to check out the transmission - which is now fine, but they have told me that computer chip (module) for the transmission also needs replacing.
AS I have no owners manual for this european specifications auto - I have no way to verify that these modules exists, or enough Italian to assist me in getting through to the local Renault dealer - what it is that I need to know...
The mechanic states that will cost around 1300 (Euro) to repair, (OBTW - this shop in Naples, Italy), and I am at a loss as to whether this is required and if this is legitimate?

Had I previously seen the post on how to re-synch the key fob (with known Door Code or with software download to derive the key code) - I could have tried this, but I just recently found this info and did not have the car to try it.

This "Garage" has had my auto since Mid November and I am finally going to get it back tomorrow. However, I am very concerned that I have no way of knowing that the work described to me as required - is anything resembling what a Renault dealer would have charged me?
HAs anyone had a similar loss of memory problem that required a replacement for the engine control module computer and the transmission computer? Any idea about how much this should have cost? And any recommendations on questions I should ask about the work completed, or warranty on the work done with regard to these computer modules - for each?
