The switch at the gearbox is probably faulty. It determines whether the car's in gear or not and therefore whether you need to press the clutch for the starter circuit to kick in. It also operates the reverse lights - any problems there?
I concur. Had the same whan my reverse lights failed due to the switch.
Interestingly now I can ...
Forget the car is in gear and press the start button - nothing happens.
Then press the clutch within 5 seconds and the car starts without pressing the button again. Looks like it remembers the press.
