It's not a daft answer at all.
I'd check all the fuses and go from there.If that doesn't show anything up,make sure you have the radio code and disconnect the battery for a few hours.The
unit which controls many of the lights/wipers etc can get confused and if you disconnect the battery it might reset it's self.It's a long shot,but it's worth a try.
If that still doesn't work,then you need to obtain a multimeter or a test light and follow the feed from the switch all the way back to the rear light clusters to see where it dissapears.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
