The Passat has two trip computers. One will automatically reset after 2 hours or so of the ignition being off, the other has to be manually reset.

I always fill it up to the brim, and rarely fill it up unless it is in the red, so I always reset the trip computer when I fill up. This way I an get an indication of MPG over a full tank, and also an indication of MPG for each trip.

As has been said before, if you have a good mix of driving conditions, your average MPG should settle down to a good average after a few hundred miles, so you won't see much of a change from there on.

My individual trips can be anywhere from 35 to 45 MPG, but my average MPG for a full tank (about 600 miles) is always around 40 MPG.

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow...

Wanna see what I drive? No pics of the latest Passat, but you can see the Scenic II here and the CB1000R here!

Previous Passat here and Bandit here.
