is there a reason why I couldn't go clutchless into first?
Changing gears once you are moving merely involves adjusting the engine revs (and therefore the gearbox 'spinning' speed) to compensate for the revs required for the next gear.
However if you're not moving, then the required revs to be in first gear are zero - therefore you would need the gearbox to be stopped. The gearbox will only be stopped either with the engine off, or the clutch pressed.
