You are correct in what you say. To do it properly you would take a switched feed from somewhere to the relay coil , then take a direct feed from the battery, through a fuse to the common pole of the relay. Then connect your load to the n/o contact of the relay.

In my experience though, unless you have the knowledge, it is all to easy for DIYers to find a convenient switched feed and connect their load directly to it.

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow...
