We set about checking earthing straps at the weekend and my husband decided to check all the fuses were tightly in place too. Guess what, the little connector thingy on the chip thingy (is this where a diagnostics thing would link?) in the fuse box wasn't on properly, and wouldn't push into place properly. One of the pins was bent, so that having been bent back and connector snapped properly into place himself took it out to do some short bits and stops and things and it behaved. It has now behaved for me everyday so that was it.
Thanks for the suggestion: it set us on the right lines and I'm glad the autospark didn't turn up now as a few minutes of our time was much better value!
Only problem now is that one of the door knobs is stuck down!
