Laguna II - Starting problem - electrical noises

I have a 2002 Laguna 1.9 DCI, which I have owned for 5years with no starting problem until now.

When you put the key card in, all the correct dashboard lights come on, wait for "Start" to illuminate, but when you press the Start button, various dashboard lights flash on and off and there is some sort of electrical relay clicking noise from under the dash (the clicking ends when you take your finger off the Start button). The engine doesn't turn over but the radio works, headlights, heating etc so it doesn't appear to be a dead battery.

The car is garaged at home and hasn't been out for about two weeks. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Many thanks, Clive
