Have a look on . I know it's about wiring in their handsfree kits, but their diagrams give you the ISO pin-outs too. Mute should be on pin 1, 2 or 3 of the power (rather than speaker) ISO block.

It does sound like something's pulling down the voltage on the mute wire, so cutting it stands a good chance of sorting the problem. Though if you do have anything that uses the mute wire (handsfree phone kit or voice synth) it'll no longer pause/mute the stereo if you do this.

If the stereo was actually going off and on prior to this 'speech' problem, then it sounds like something may have been chafing the stereo loom. That won't be the easiest thing to trace or fix if it has
