As far as i am aware, supermarkets buy their fuel from the major refiners, Esso, Bp, shell, etc. The difference is the additives, the branded fuels have extra additives in them and the supermarket fuels don't.
I tend to buy either tesco or shell diesel and i have noticed a difference.
Both my Scenic and my previous peugeot 405 run better on shell.
Tesco is 5% bio diesel and shell extra contains additives like Millers diesel additive so that could be the difference.
