AFM problem on Master 2.8dci van

Had my Master at a reliable workshop because it run rough and had no power.
They replaced a few sensors and checked /tested pump and fuel pressure but still no power.
They also replaced the AFM and still the problem persisted. Now they decided to disconnect the AFM and miraculously ,van runs fine...perfect in fact!If they connect the NEW AFM ,van has no power!I am now running the van with the AFM disconnected!
My question is ,does the AFM have to be coded by a Renault dealer for the Ecu to know that a new AFM is there?
I ask this because I also have a BMW 330 D and when the AFM went,it had to be coded by dealer, before ECU accepted it
Thanks for your help....
