A left hand tool did it for me......
I invested in a left hand brake tool (specifically, a SEALEY BRAKE WIND BACK TOOL LEFT HAND) from toolshopdirect - basically I didn't want the lack of a decent tool making the job any harder.
In the end the most difficult bit was getting the wheels off - they had corroded on to the hubs.
As with most things you can probably make do without the tool but it's not that expensive.
If you're anywhere near Stratford or south Birmingham you're welcome to borrow it.
