There is usually a 30-40 second delay before the alarm arms itself but the only sure way to find out is to test it. There should be a contact button under the bonnet which the bonnet presses against when closed. Open the bonnet stick the button down with some strong tape. Leave the bonnet open - set the alarm - wait for about one minute. Then remove the tape and see if the alarm activates.
