OK, now you're going to say this is obvious but it wasn't at the time.
I inspected all the less obvious fuses and found the 20A (penultimate fuse) labled as "lighting rheostat" was blown. This also says in the handbook that it covers radio and rearview mirrors. So I guess with hindsight this is obvious. Replaced the fuse and the instrument panel gave me it's warm glow again.
Advice, write in your handbook against this fuse "Instrument Panel display lighting"
I kinda think that if I had access to a maintenance manual (rather than just a handbook) it may have helped me more. Does anyone know how to get a manual covering 1998 or are all post 1996 (last Hayes Espace Year) Espace owners out in the cold?

i just had my car mot,d in N-Ireland where its different than on the mainland anywaythe car is shaken about abit during test once passed around an hour later my dash on my espace 2003 1.9dci started flashing on and off and now its just off, indicator not clicking when moved up or down but working fine on the outside radio stich to not going it somtimes lashes on and off when i give it a dunt but dont want to be doing this do you have any idea what is wrong and a possible solution?....
