Thanks for the info Hammer-ter it could well have been what you say, but thanks to your previous tip of switching the side lights on first before connecting the battery it now seems that it has cured all my problems.
Previously when I put the new battery on it caused all sorts of problems and it seems that something was stuck on even when switched off it could well have been the solenoid that you mention or a relay, servo motor,gremlins
, however I am glad to say (up to now) the problem now seems to have gone and the car is really running great.
So again thanks to Hammer-ter and everyone for your tips and suggestions much appreciated
