The power steering pump will be driven off the same belt (auxillary belt) that also drives the alternator / air con pump / water pump IIRC.
Not sure how a dodgy alternator would stop the PAS working, unless there is little or no charge in the battery (due to it not being charged) to power the PAS pump ??
A snapped belt or a jammed idler pulley stopping the belt going round would. But if that happens you would know about it as the cambelt could snap too
