It certaintly does sound like a poor or loose connection somewhere.
If the 'hit the dash' idea doesn't work,then it just a case of having the car running with the lights on and going around the engine bay tapping things and generally 'wiggling' wires and seeing if anything you do effects the lights.
I have had problems with the mainbeam switches on earlier Clios than yours,but this doesn't usually effect the dashboard illumination.
One other thing to check is the rear lights.Get some one to sit in the car with the sidelights on and with their foot on the brake and then tell them to turn the indicators on.If the lights all start flashing like a Christmas tree you have a bad earth connection to the lights.This can cause allsorts of strange electrical faults but is very easy to remedy.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
