It's just the number of miles elapsed since the trip was last reset. The key shaped icon is really supposed to be a signpost, representing where you were when you last reset the trip mileage, the car represents where you are now, and the dots represent the distance travelled inbetween.
From the sound of things, nobody has reset the trip computer in over 9000 miles. If it's the same as the Laguna II's trip, it'll reset to zero when it passes 9999.
If the trip computer has other functions, then you can usually cycle through them via a button on the end of the wiper stalk (some of the very latest models operate differently, but older models should have this button if they actually have the computer.) If that button isn't present, then I doubt very much that you have the full trip computer. Resetting the trip will either be the usual button protruding from the dash display, or if that's not present, pressing and holding the button on the end of the wiper stalk should do the trick.
