I think they just stop pad rattle when the brakes are at rest. You should be able to pick up another one at a motor factors, they might only do kits for the whole of the car though?? Shouldn't really matter without it though.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall.
Torque is how far you take the wall with you.
